Common Key Skills and Action Verbs for Nursing Entry-Level Resumes
The hiring process today is far more automated than in any previous generation. In the past, HR recruiters and hiring managers went through resumes by hand, but modern companies now use applicant tracking systems, or ATS. These software products pre-screen resumes, using keywords and phrases to determine the best candidates for a job opening. The resumes an ATS filters out are often automatically rejected.
Using the right keywords can improve the likelihood of making it through to a hiring manager. The specific keywords in use will vary from one industry and job posting to another, but these skills and terms can apply to a wide variety of nursing jobs.

Tips for Writing a Better Nursing Entry-Level Resume
Outline Clinical Experience
For newly graduated nurses, there are often more similarities than differences from one resume to the next. All nursing students, for example, are expected to rotate through different areas of medicine and shadow professionals in numerous clinical settings.
However, clinical experience outside of nursing school can help any resume stand apart from the rest. Candidates who previously served in a health care field, like working with emergency medical services (EMS) or as a Certified Nursing Assistant, should highlight this experience to the greatest level possible. Showing an ability to manage patients and provide care outside of an academic setting can be an indication of success in a nursing role.
Example #1
Good
Worked one-on-one with patients in need following medical emergencies, including placing IVs, administering medications and monitoring vital signs.
Bad
Provided care to patients while in transit to the hospital
Example #2
Good
Provided valuable patient care as directed by the nursing supervisors, including cleaning incisions, wrapping wounds, taking vital signs and monitoring medication administration for reactions.
Bad
Assisted nursing supervisors with general patient care
Demonstrate a Passion for People
While doctors often handle the high-level medicine, such as writing prescriptions and ordering tests, nurses are the heart and soul of patient management on a daily basis. Great nurses are those who truly care about their patients, no matter the circumstances.
For entry-level nursing jobs without significant time on the wards, any people-related prior experience is beneficial. From waiting tables to serving as a senior aid, any job that demonstrates an ability to work with people is a plus. Emphasize face-to-face interactions in job descriptions, demonstrating that your ability to interface with others will be a benefit, not a hindrance, to your future as a nurse.
Example #1
Good
Acted as the main point of contact for bar guests, creating relationships with patrons by preparing drinks, serving food and anticipating customer needs to create a fun and comfortable atmosphere.
Bad
Served as head bartender on weekends, mixing drinks and serving patrons
Example #2
Good
Provided necessary care to nursing home residents, including partnering with residents to plan outfits, bathe and groom for the day and make nutritional dining choices.
Bad
Assisted nursing home residents with daily tasks
How to Align Your Resume With the Job Description
The pressure to land a great job is a reality for all recently certified nurses. For those who want to work in a specific geographical area or field, this can mean sending out as many resumes as possible as quickly as possible. However, this can often result in missing one of the most important steps in job seeking: resume customization.
Instead of sending the same resume out to every job, regardless of specifics, it’s important to adjust resumes to best align with the requirements of each individual opening. By reading through each job posting thoroughly, identifying the most important overarching concepts and updating resumes accordingly, it’s possible to improve your odds of standing out from the crowd.
